It’s so good to have someone to talk to. Sharing good news. Checking on each other to make sure they are okay. Ringing a friend to connect with them can make a person’s day feel so much better. Sometimes when walking down the street or going into the local shop even just saying ‘hello’ might make a big difference to their world. It may be that you are the only person they will connect with on that day if they live alone or feel alone.
There is a song called ‘Happy talk’ from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific. I love the lyrics.
Happy talk, keep talkin’ happy talk,
Talk about things you’d like to do.
You got to have a dream,
If you don’t have a dream,
How you gonna have a dream come true?
Talk about the moon floatin’ in the sky
Lookin’ like a lily on the lake
Talk about a bird learnin’ how to fly.
Makin’ all the music he can make.
Talk about the sparrow lookin’ like a toy
Pickin’ through the broaches of a tree;
Talk about the girl, talk about the boy
Countin’ all the ripples on the sea
Talk about the boy sayin’ to the girl:
“Golly, baby, I’m a lucky cuss.”
Talk about the girl sayin’ to the boy:
“You an’ me is lucky to be us!”
If you don’t talk happy,
And you never have dream,
Then you’ll never have a dream come true!
You can talk about anything really, just talk and share and help each other to dream!
I find it so difficult on a train or tube when everyone just sits there and no one talks to each other. I can feel myself bursting to just say ‘hello’ and start a conversation.
It is so good to have someone to talk to if you have a problem. As the saying goes ‘A problem shared is a problem halved’. It can help the other person feel useful too and give them a sense of purpose. We can share experiences and help each other.
In the Bible there is a book called ‘Psalms’ and the writers express their feelings to God as if they are talking to Him. The Psalm writers consistently pour out their thoughts and emotions to God. I also do this by writing my thoughts in a journal. I tell God how I am feeling and often my awareness and appreciation of God grows as I am honest when talking to Him.
The Lord is close to all who call on Him, yes to all who call on Him in truth.
He grants the desires of those who fear Him, He hears their cries for help and rescues them.
Psalm 146: 18-19
So be encouraged to talk to God, talk to friends and even talk to strangers – for it’s good to talk!
